A Variation on the Paradox of Two Envelopes

چکیده
The paradox of two envelopes, one containing twice as much money as the other, is one of several that address logical aspects of probabilistic reasoning. Many presentations of the paradox are resolved by understanding the need to specify the distribution of quantities in the envelopes. However, even if a simple distribution of numbers is known, a new set of reasoning problems arise. The puzzle as presented here shares features with other reasoning problems and suggests a direction for their

Green envelopes classification: the comparative analysis of efficient factors on the thermal and energy performance of green envelopes
This paper classifies green envelopes as green roofs and green walls according to effective factors, which were derived from literature to compare the green envelopes’ thermal and energy performance in a more effective way. For this purpose, an extensive literature review was carried out by searching keywords in databases and studying related journal papers and articles. The research meth...
متن کاملBertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random
The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...
متن کاملTranslation Invariance and Finite Additivity in a Probability Measure on the Natural Numbers
Inspired by the “two envelopes exchange paradox,” a finitely additive probability measure m on the natural numbers is introduced. The measure is uniform in the sense that m({i})=m({j}) for all i,j ∈N. The measure is shown to be translation invariant and has such desirable properties as m({i∈N | i≡ 0(mod2)})= 1/2. For any r ∈ [0,1], a set A is constructed such that m(A)= r ; however, m is not de...
متن کاملThe Paradox of Intervening in Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...
متن کاملThe Two-Envelope Paradox: A Complete Analysis?
March 22, 1994 A wealthy eccentric places two envelopes in front of you. She tells you that both envelopes contain money, and that one contains twice as much as the other, but she does not tell you which is which. You are allowed to choose one envelope, and to keep all the money you find inside. This may seem innocuous, but it generates an apparent paradox. Say that you choose envelope 1, and i...
